The Brazil Mangrove Restoration Project aims to rehabilitate degraded mangrove ecosystems along the Brazilian coast. These vital habitats are crucial for biodiversity, coastal protection, and carbon sequestration. Through community engagement and innovative techniques, we plan to restore approximately 500 hectares of mangrove forest over the next three years. This initiative not only supports wildlife but also contributes to the livelihoods of local communities dependent on these ecosystems.
Michigan's forests are a cornerstone of the state's rural communities, playing a vital economic and ecological role. This crucial restoration initiative focuses on red pine, a keystone species. Each year, as part of the natural growth cycle, 70 to 90-year-old red pine plantations on state land are replanted with red pine seedlings, rapidly re-establishing these essential landscapes. This effort provides essential carbon sequestration and creates diverse wildlife habitats, supporting species dependent on pinecones and conifer canopies. Red pine forests are also vital to local economies. This restoration is more than trees; it's an investment in a sustainable, thriving future for Michigan's forests, wildlife, and communities.
In Senegal, the conventional crop intensification model has proven inadequate, jeopardizing livelihoods, degrading soils, contributing to biodiversity loss, and aggravating the effects of climate change. Peanut monocropping has led to adverse environmental and economic impacts. Despite successful past management, the Ndankou and Patte Forests face threats such as encroaching peanut farming and reduced forest cover.
Coastal communities in Eastern Africa depend on the mangrove ecosystems for employment, livelihood, and nutrition. In recent decades, these coastal areas have been urbanized at unprecedented rates. Mangrove forests were converted into other land use. Coupled with a lack of effective governance, mangroves were overexploited and over-harvested. The destruction of the mangrove forests also contributed to the loss of critical habitats for many organisms. Threatening the livelihoods of these impoverished communities, pushing them further into poverty.
This project is designed to restore landscape mosaics of both old Forest structure and Open Canopy structure within the footprint of the 2013 Rim Fire. This project occurs in the Tuolumne Watershed, a key watershed within California. The Tuolumne Watershed is a critical supplier of water to the Central Valley and the Bay Area, and restored forests will provide both water supply and water quality benefits. Restoring mixed conifer forests will reduce erosion, increase structure and thermal cover for wildlife species, and lower water temperature in riparian areas, while simultaneously increasing carbon sequestration.
