Restoring East African Mangroves for Earth Day and Beyond.

    March 07, 2025

Restoring East African Mangroves for Earth Day and Beyond.

In celebration of Earth Day and Earth Month, Plantd is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking reforestation project: the restoration of East African mangrove forests in Kwale, Kenya. This ambitious initiative is set to plant over 33,000 mangrove trees and rejuvenate 3,300 hectares of crucial coastal forest, empowering local communities while combating climate change.

    🌱 Why Mangroves Matter

Mangroves are nature’s frontline defenders, playing a crucial role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. Their dense root systems protect coastlines from erosion, provide critical nursery grounds for fish, and absorb vast amounts of carbon, making them a powerhouse in the fight against global warming. In fact, 80% of the global fish catch relies on mangroves, meaning their restoration directly supports food security and local economies.

However, due to rapid urbanization, overharvesting, and ineffective governance, East African mangroves have been severely degraded. This has left coastal communities vulnerable, stripping them of vital fishing grounds, stable income sources, and natural storm protection.

Our project is more than just about planting trees—it’s about reviving entire ecosystems and uplifting communities. By restoring these mangroves, we’re helping families break free from the cycle of poverty while building climate resilience for future generations.

🌍 The Impact of Your Support

This initiative is projected to create over 65,300 hours of local work, offering sustainable employment to coastal residents. By participating, you’re not just planting trees—you’re investing in people, biodiversity, and climate action.

Here’s how mangrove restoration makes a difference:
✅ Protects coastal communities from flooding and storm surges.
✅ Restores marine biodiversity, ensuring a thriving ecosystem.
✅ Captures and stores carbon, fighting global climate change.
✅ Empowers local economies, providing sustainable income sources.
