Project Overview

In Senegal, the traditional crop intensification model has fallen short, endangering livelihoods, depleting soils, reducing biodiversity, and worsening the impacts of climate change. The widespread practice of peanut monocropping has had significant environmental and economic consequences. Although the Ndankou and Patte Forests have been effectively managed in the past, they are now threatened by expanding peanut farming and declining forest cover.

The Significance Of This Project

The Senegal program aims to restore as much of the 30,000 hectares of degraded land surrounding the forests as possible, beginning with 6,000 farming families, each managing one hectare. Through land rehabilitation, sustainable practices, and community-driven stewardship, the program seeks to enhance the long-term health and sustainability of the Gambia River Watershed.

Impacts & Benefits:

Agroforestry provides significant benefits for women by expanding income opportunities and improving food security. Unlike monocropping, it enables women to cultivate a variety of high-value crops—such as honey, fruits, and vegetables—that can be sold locally and regionally. This diversified income reduces vulnerability to economic shocks while also restoring ecosystems. By supporting nutritional security and community health through diverse, locally grown foods, agroforestry strengthens rural livelihoods. Additionally, it enhances biodiversity, enriches soil health, boosts crop yields, sequesters carbon, and reduces erosion. By offering multiple income sources, agroforestry fosters both environmental sustainability and economic resilience in rural communities.
